Tournament Rules for 2004 (continued)
***********************************************

The following were adopted..and tried in the League this year. Coaches will have the option of voting to continue them or discontinue.

(1) Tournament Match Scoring

At the meeting, the coaches adopted an altered form of scoring for the tournament. Each school's "A," "B" etc. team will be put in a pool of similarly designated teams. Points for matches then will be awarded as follows (in the event of a split ballot, each team would get half).
1. A team matches = 8 points
2. B team matches = 6 points
3. C team matches = 4 points
4. D team matches = 2 point

(2) Junior Varsity Tournament Age limit

The junior varsity age limit for the tournament would be set at 16. During the regular season, as in the past, varsity and j.v. squads will intermix. However, any school totally new to the League can participate as a junior varsity team regardless of the age of the students involved.

(3) Debate off

This will be retained for this season.

Kuwait Debate League to Begin Fifth Season

The following would've appeared in the Kuwait Times or Arab Times had there been fewer wars on which to report.

On January 26th in Hawally, English curriculum schools will begin the process of finding a debating national champion as the Kuwait Debate League Season opens. Schools will compete in American style policy debate on the important issue:

"Resolved: The United States should adopt a policy that significantly reduces world terrorism."

The Kuwait Debate League includes ANY school wishing to compete in what many consider the ultimate challenge in education. To debate an issue, students must research, write a plan, and argue against rival squads from another school. At the end of the debate season the KDL tournament April 7-8th, the BIT, brings all of the schools together for a climatic final match. In the preliminary round, the scores of all of the squads together determines the top two schools, with a "debate-off" determining the final winner.

This year's edition of the KDL will include private English, American, and Indian Schools. Comments league coordinator Daniel R. Fruit:

"We have the most exciting season ever. We have three schools returning who won in previous years, Gulf English, Al-Bayan, and Fahaheel Watanieh. We also have BSK, the current Kuwait world style champion. If any school wants to claim the title of best school in Kuwait, the claiming starts here."

Al-Bayan Bilingual School, again, will serve as League host. A sample debate will occur on January 26th at 1600. Any school wishing to participate in the season should call Dr. Daniel R. Fruit or email:
